ATLA

Association of Teachers of Lipreading for Adults

The Association of Teachers of Lipreading to Adults (ATLA) is a small national charity whose aims are: to promote lipreading as a valuable form of communication; to enable people to become lipreading teachers through granting training bursaries and to support lipreading teachers by giving grants to set up new classes.

Lipreading and Managing Hearing Loss classes support deafened and hard of hearing people as they learn to live well in a noisy world. Lipreading is about recognising lip-shapes, gestures and facial movements when someone is speaking but  other skills are needed to support what you can observe, including concentration and the ability to use the context to work out the gist of what someone is saying.  People say, “Lipreading classes give me the confidence to get on with life,”  and “Attending lipreading classes has shown me that I’m not alone,”

Come and visit the ATLA stand to find out a bit more about lipreading and how to find a local face-to-face class, or an online class with one of our qualified teachers.

ATLA: creating a world where lipreading classes are available to all who need them.

ATLA will be offering a lipreading taster session during our Hearing Information Day. Come along and find out more about lipreading and what’s involved.
