Sky Subtitles

Moaning about things may be the national hobby but I, probably from the experience of reading my teacher’s remarks on many reports, prefer constructive criticism and acknowledge of good work and effort.

So I am delighted to report that this morning, August 21, I watched the 9am headlines on Sky News and read subtitles that were accurate and fast enough to relate to visuals. I’m not for a moment trying to suggest that Sky’s producers read my criticism of their subtitling.

Someone, either at the broadcasters or subtitling service, must have realised things need improving and done something about the subs. All that matters is that subtitle users have been better catered for, so – well done Sky and the subtitlers, thanks.

This afternoon, filled with thoughts of subtitles, I wondered if the Welsh language channel, SVC, had subtitles and, if so, how did Welsh look written on the screen?  After pressing the select button I was watching a colourful show for youngsters with chat and singing in Welsh – and subtitles in English!

A little later on I switched back to SVC and was surprised the children’s presenters and the next programme were also subbed in English rather than the language the station was intended to promote.
