What does the session cover?
‘Managing your healthcare with hearing loss’ is designed and presented by our peer support volunteers, who all have lived or professional experience of hearing loss.
Through discussing personal experiences, it is clear that deaf and hard of hearing people can face several challenges and obstacles when accessing healthcare information and services. These can include:
- Communication barriers: significant challenges in communicating with healthcare providers can hinder access to effective care.
- Poorer health outcomes: communication barriers can lead to misinterpretation of information and delay diagnosis and treatment.
- Uneven implementation of standards: healthcare providers are not always fully aware of ‘what works’ in terms of communication.
- Emotional Stress: worrying about communication difficulties can deter people with hearing loss from seeking medical care.
Improving accessibility and communication in healthcare settings is crucial to ensure that people with hearing loss receive equal care. Our webinar is designed to give you a series of practical tips, and above all, the confidence to address any issues you may have in managing your healthcare.
In this webinar, we cover multiple healthcare settings, and the session is split into the following sections:
- Your healthcare, your way: Find out how health providers are obligated to communicate with patients and tips for building support for appointments.
- GP surgeries and pharmacies: Key steps to ensuring people with hearing loss are suitably prepared to meet clinicians and tips for making pharmacy visits go as smoothly as possible.
- Going to hospital: Best practice for planning appointments from receiving an appointment date through to any tests and follow-up.
- Staying in hospital: Discover how to prepare for short- and long-term hospital stays, and to ensure successful communication.
- Dentist and optician: Understanding the challenges of these environments.
- Accident and Emergency: Planning for the unplannable.
